A Little Information About Simone (Founder of Manea Porinesia)
My journey began years ago when I ventured to the United States from the culturally rich land of Brazil. I have always had a great passion for Polynesian dancing through which I have embraced this beautiful culture. My career began 14 years ago when I started learning and performing with one of the most prestigious Polynesian groups in Colorado: “The Sumeo Family.” They were very well known for their fire knife abilities and strong Tahitian dancers. I personally love all of the Polynesian dances, Hula, Maori, Siva; but my true passion is for Tahitian Dance. The drums captivated my heart from the beginning, and I’ve been recognized for my strength as a Tahitian dancer her in Colorado. I have learned a lot from my mentors, Charlene and Time Sumeo as well as other dancers along the way. When I first started, I couldn’t even speak English; but the drums captured my heart. Imaging trying to learn a dance without knowing what the teacher was saying!! Read the rest of this entry »

POLYNESIAN DANCERS,ONLY GOOD IF 100% FULL-BLOODED?
Current mood:
annoyed
This is for all the Polynesian Dancers out there that love their culture and continue to embrace this beautiful ohana.
I have recently, on many different occasions heard and read it quotes like this one:
“They are not good dancers because they are not true Hawaiians”
or, “Its not authentic because it is not Hawaiian blood” etc…
So here are the questions
Should blood matter when it comes to passion for the dance and culture?
Does blood makes you a better dancer or mean that you have more knowledge?
